Reflections Of My Weight Loss Surgery – a patient’s experience and learnings

by May 8, 2023Uncategorized

It’s almost 12 months since the day I arrived at hospital to have weight loss surgery, a carefully chosen sleeve gastrectomy.   It has been a year of many changes and quite a journey.  Hindsight is always a gift and I have spent a lot of time reflecting. Even now, I am still very much open to learning about this new way of eating, and adjusting my relationship with food, hospitality, celebrations, family life, and most importantly my health.

I have a history of not being able to sustain weight loss – not through want of trying, nor through managing chronic health conditions that being a lighter weight would certainly have improved.  Unfortunately, my previous ways of trying to get my health back were not able to bring about the necessary outcomes.   Through a series of investigations and some good medical advice I sought out a way forward and now a year on, I may offer some tips that could resonate with others going through the same journey.

I had read about the research into mind and gut connection, and I knew it was important to put into practice and hone some of the mindfulness skills that I had already learnt about.  You too will learn to really listen to your gut and your body, and adjust to new full feelings.  You will also learn that eating slowly and purposefully will increase your ability to let food digest properly, and how nutritious food can satisfy you and give you strength.

Working with the dietician I learnt about the necessity of protein at every meal, the value of water in our diet, the importance of nutrient rich foods and, of course, satisfaction.  Those old habits of overeating and snacking will not be a part of your new way of achieving your goals.  A year on, I know which foods are the best for me.  Pleasingly, I have been able to cope with all food groups, but at a much smaller serving size.

Going out for a meal may be a source of anxiety initially. In the early days you’ll wonder what you can and can’t do and eat. I encourage you to remember that being together as family, or enjoying your social time with friends is just as important as the food itself.  Try not to be totally engrossed in the menu – keep your focus on other ways to enjoy a wonderful night out.  It’s not just about the food.  What else can you enjoy about being out and about?  Nevertheless, I have found that restaurants are usually accommodating and try to make meal sizes that are appropriate to those who have had weight loss surgery.

The surprise gift in all of this was a health coach, a part of the overall surgery package.  This mentoring and relationship, before the surgery and after proved to be nothing short of amazing. I am moving, walking, exercising and generally feeling well.  This has given my mind, body and spirit a great lift.

I have had a very positive and life changing experience in the last twelve months since wight loss surgery.   However, I would not dare to say that this is all there is.  I know the changes I have made now need to be consolidated to make the future outcomes not only achievable, but also sustainable.

I look forward to travelling overseas this year, with the health and confidence to get the most out of life.  I have so much gratitude to all who have been a part of this story.
