Understanding Dumping Syndrome After Gastric Sleeve Surgery

by Apr 3, 2024Weight Loss Surgery

Dumping syndrome is a known complication of gastric sleeve surgery, but its frequency can vary among individuals. The incidence of dumping syndrome after gastric sleeve surgery is generally reported to be lower compared to gastric bypass surgery, another common bariatric procedure. Today I’ll explain what dumping syndrome is and how to avoid it if you can.

Gastric Sleeve Surgery – A Recap

Before getting into dumping syndrome, let’s revisit the basics of gastric sleeve surgery. Also known as sleeve gastrectomy, this procedure involves the removal of a significant portion of the stomach, leaving a slender “sleeve-like” stomach. This results in reduced stomach capacity and aids in weight loss by limiting the amount of food a person can consume.

In gastric sleeve surgery, the valve at the base of the stomach is preserved, which helps regulate the emptying of stomach contents into the small intestine. This tends to reduce the occurrence of dumping syndrome compared to procedures where it is bypassed or removed.

Dumping Syndrome: What Is It and Why Does It Occur?

Dumping syndrome is a common complication post-bariaric surgery, occurring when food (especially sugar) moves too quickly from the stomach to the small intestine. This rapid transit triggers a variety of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe, including nausea, sweating, dizziness, and abdominal discomfort. There are two types of dumping syndrome: early and late.

Early Dumping Syndrome

The abrupt influx of undigested food into the small intestine prompts a surge in blood sugar levels. This occurs within 30 minutes of eating and is often associated with symptoms like nausea, vomiting, and rapid heart rate.

Late Dumping Syndrome

Happening 1 to 3 hours after eating, this phase is characterised by symptoms such as weakness, sweating, and dizziness. It is caused by a rapid release of insulin, leading to a drop in blood sugar levels.

Tips for Avoiding Dumping Syndrome

Here’s some practical tips to help you steer clear of dumping syndrome and ensure a smoother recovery.

  1. Mindful Eating: Chew your food thoroughly and savour each bite. Eating slowly can prevent the rapid passage of food into the small intestine.
  2. Balanced Nutrition: Follow your post-bariatric surgery diet, while avoiding sugary snacks and beverages.
  3. Hydration Habits: Opt for sipping liquids between meals rather than during. Consuming liquids alongside meals may contribute to faster transit and trigger dumping syndrome.
  4. Consult Your Bariatric Team: Regular check-ins with your bariatric team, including dietitians (link to Lisa) and healthcare providers (Meredith, physicians), are essential. They can provide personalised guidance based on your progress and needs.

Embracing a Healthier Tomorrow

As you begin your transformative journey with gastric sleeve surgery,  understanding and addressing potential side effects such as dumping syndrome is a key component. By adopting mindful eating habits, staying vigilant about food choices, and maintaining open communication with your healthcare team, you pave the way for a healthier and more fulfilling life.
