Beyond the Quick Fix: Weight Loss Medication in 2024

With weight loss, the allure of quick fixes and temporary solutions is everywhere we look. Weight loss medication has become an increasingly popular ‘fix’, and while having its place, often fails to address the root problems associated with obesity. Our approach is empowering individuals to take ownership of their health through a comprehensive approach that goes beyond shortcuts.

Weight loss operations demand a commitment to behavioural change from people considering surgery. It necessitates a deep dive into understanding your relationship with food and fostering new habits that promote a healthier lifestyle. Surgery becomes a catalyst for this transformation, prompting individuals to reassess and reframe their perspectives on nutrition and overall well-being.

Weight loss medication on the other hand will certainly aid in weight loss in the short term, but once a person stops taking that medication they will likely find that they regain the weight (and often more) simply because it has stopped working and they hadn’t made any other meaningful changes to their lifestyle.

A Changing Landscape: BMI and Patient Eligibility

In 2023 we experienced a shift in the criteria for eligibility for weight loss surgery. The previous IFSO guidelines determined that individuals who had a BMI of 35 plus comorbidities or a BMI of 40+ were eligible for bariatric surgery. Now that has been lowered to a BMI of 30 plus comorbidities or a BMI of 35+. This means more individuals are now eligible for weight loss surgery, opening doors for those who may not have qualified under previous criteria.

If you’re living with obesity but have previously been ineligible, now is the time to reassess. Our doors are open, and we are here to provide the support and guidance you need.
